Early praise for Grace & Peace:

“Grace & Peace is a tender, wise companion for all of us who live with limits, missteps, and unanswered questions, yet still desire to trust God more deeply.”

— Rev. Dr. Ruben Saenz Jr., Bishop, The Horizon Texas Conference; President, Council of Bishops, The United Methodist Church

What Grace & Peace is

When life feels uncertain, a few steadying minutes with God can change the shape of a day. Grace & Peace offers 365 daily readings that bring the wisdom of Scripture to the questions people are living with now.

Travel from Genesis to Revelation through accessible, thoughtful reflections grounded in serious biblical scholarship and shaped by more than four decades of pastoral care. Every day also includes a hymn — its title, composer and year — an invitation to seek it out and read, listen, sing, or simply sit with faith’s poetry in whatever form you choose to meet it.

Grace & Peace belongs to no single church or denomination — only to the love of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Whether you are new to the Scriptures, returning to faith, carrying doubts, or seeking a deeper daily rhythm, this is more than a devotional. It is a trustworthy companion for ordinary days, difficult questions, and a complicated world.

A hymn for every day

Most devotionals give you a verse and a few paragraphs. Grace & Peace gives you a hymn as well — one for each of the 365 days.

Some mornings you will recognize it at once. Some mornings you will want to find the tune and sing it. Some mornings the title alone will be enough. The hymn is not an ornament on the reading; it is the other half of it — the place where the day’s Scripture stops being an idea and becomes something you can carry with you.

What makes Grace & Peace different

  • A hymn with every reading. All 365 days pair Scripture with a hymn — seek it out, sing it, or sit with it.
  • The whole Bible, not the highlights. One unbroken journey from Genesis to Revelation across a year.
  • Depth without density. Serious biblical scholarship worn lightly, in five to ten minutes a morning.
  • No denominational fence. Written for the love of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ, not for one church.
  • A lifetime, distilled. More than four decades of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care, gathered into 365 readings.

Who it’s for

Grace & Peace was written for anyone seeking a steadier, wiser way through the day:

  • Lifelong Christians deepening a daily practice.
  • Mainline and progressive believers who want depth without dogma.
  • Readers who love hymns and want them back in a daily rhythm.
  • Seekers, doubters, and the spiritually curious—no seminary degree required.
  • Small groups, Bible studies, Sunday school classes, and whole congregations.

How to read it

Begin on any morning. Read a day at a time and let a year unfold, or move at your own pace — each reading takes five to ten minutes. Use it alone as a daily devotional, or together, as a companion for a class, a small group, or a church-wide journey through Scripture. However you come to it, it is a book to reach for every day.

For churches and small groups

Grace & Peace was built to be read together as easily as alone — a full year for a Sunday school class, a small group, or an entire congregation walking through the Bible at the same pace. Church and group pricing starts at 25 copies — see group and church orders.

Questions Readers Ask

Does every reading include a hymn?

Yes. All 365 daily readings close with a hymn — its title, composer and year — an invitation to look it up, listen, or sing it yourself. (The hymn texts themselves are not reprinted.)

How long does each day’s reading take?

Five to ten minutes.

Do I have to start on January 1?

No. Grace & Peace is not dated. Begin on any morning and read a day at a time.

Does the book cover the whole Bible?

Yes. The 365 readings travel from Genesis to Revelation across a year — the full arc, not a selection of highlights.

Do I need to be United Methodist to read it?

No. Grace & Peace belongs to no single church or denomination. It was written for lifelong believers, returning seekers, newcomers to Scripture, and people carrying doubts alike.

Can a small group or Sunday school class use it?

Yes. It is built to work as a year-long companion for a class, a small group, or a whole congregation. Church and group price starts at 25 copies.

Is it really 858 pages?

Yes — and it is meant to be read two or three pages at a time. A year of short daily readings adds up to a long book; no one sits down with all of it at once.

Who wrote it?

Dr. Tim Bruster, who served nearly two decades as senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth and has more than four decades of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care behind him.

What formats is it available in, and how long is it?

Early Acclaim for Grace & Peace

Rev. Dr. Ruben Saenz Jr.

“GRACE & PEACE: A DAILY GUIDE FOR DEEPENING FAITH is a tender, wise companion for all of us who live with limits, missteps, and unanswered questions, yet still desire to trust God more deeply. ...Drawing on the full sweep of Scripture, scholarship, and the rich language of the Church’s hymns, Tim shows how God’s grace meets us where we truly are, encounters our human limitation, error, and sin, and gently leads us into deeper trust and resilient hope. ... I commend GRACE & PEACE to laity and clergy alike as a daily guide that will both comfort and stretch the heart. Read it slowly, pray its Scriptures, sing its hymns, and you will find yourself drawn into a more trusting, hope-filled life under the sufficiency of God’s grace and peace.”

“What a refreshing devotional. Tim Bruster has put together what I believe is the most comprehensive Christian devotional I’ve ever read, combining biblical scholarship, a deep understanding of the power of hymnology as a theological resource, as well as 45+ years of experience as a pastor and leader in the Church. And yet, each of the 365 segments works as a complete devotional on its own, providing a portal into the particular scriptural or hymn reference if one wishes to go even deeper. GRACE & PEACE will certainly make a nice coffee table book to browse upon for the casual reader, but it is much, much more for those of us who wish to explore Dr. Bruster’s depths of scholarship and pastoral wisdom. I highly recommend this book for clergy and lay people alike!”

What distinguishes this book is that the analysis of the selected verses is both deeply personal—relating the cosmic vision to the individual human being’s spiritual journey—and also scholarly ... This combination is rare to find, and I believe this book will appeal to both the sincere seeker and the scholar. ...I especially like Tim’s approach, where rather than preach he encourages the reader to deeply question their own assumptions about matters such as freedom and boundaries. All organized religions struggle with reconciling certain aspects of scripture and practice that divide rather than unite, ... and Tim navigates these challenges with wise discrimination and tact, providing a path forward for Christians in today’s society where different faiths must coexist peacefully in close proximity.”

and recording artist
“Tim reminds us that hope has been part of our story all along. He has a gift for taking these ancient texts and helping us find ourselves in them—not as people who need to have everything figured out, but as people already worthy of grace. He gives us a roadmap back to something I think we can easily forget: there is so much available to us simply by being here, being human, and allowing ourselves to see our lives through the eyes of grace. This reminder of hope—that grace is here waiting for us—feels like a gift.” — Elizabeth Wills, songwriter, recording artist
William A. Waddell Jr., attorney and lifelong United Methodist
“Tim Bruster’s GRACE & PEACE is a wonderful devotional journey through the Bible that helps the reader pause each day to be in the presence of God—and Tim. Tim is the perfect guide for the journey, mixing his deep knowledge of scripture with familiar cultural examples and insights, often in a way that makes the reader think more deeply, grasp truth, and simply smile. Grace & Peace is not preachy or doctrinaire, yet it gently but powerfully nudges us closer to the mind of Christ. The pairing of hymns with each day’s devotional is an added dimension for deeper thought each day. Tim and his Grace & Peace will be my devotional guides for the coming year.”
Dr. Jim Riddlesperger
Professor Emeritus of Political Science
Texas Christian University
“In GRACE & PEACE, Dr. Bruster leads the reader through an ambitious journey through the Bible in a year. I love that his approach is grounded in daily living while being tied to good theology at the same time. It encourages the habit of critical thinking about life and the ways we can learn to love one another. And as an added bonus, we are led in each lesson to humming familiar hymns as we go through the day! This book will serve as a blessing both to the reader’s mind and to their sense of place among the people of the world.”
Dr. Gil Rendle
Author of Countercultural:

“Any path of a discipline of faith is often best experienced with a guide—one who has gone before and is grounded both in thought and life. When following the discipline of text study, Tim Bruster is such a guide. He writes from a studied familiarity with the text, but also as a seasoned pastor and a fellow sojourner. To read the text and then be accompanied by this guide’s reflections encourages an openness of heart and a willingness to learn. Following such a path can lead to a life of grace and peace. Thank you, Tim.”
Rev. Brooks Harrington, attorney
founder of the
Methodist Justice Ministry
Author of No Mercy, No Justice
“Our good friend and pastor Tim has graced us with a year-long Bible feast divided into a meal for every day of the year. Tim’s is not a book we will read through once and then put aside, but one we will turn to as a daily companion for the rest of our praying lives. What an investment in our spirits! His book takes us through the entirety of scripture in a year’s time, divided into 365 sittings, with his original guide to each section and our choice of scripture translation. And, uniquely, given his love for sacred music, each section cites a beloved hymn.
An astonishing undertaking!”
