About the book

When life feels uncertain, a few steadying minutes with God can change the shape of a day. Grace & Peace offers 365 daily readings that bring the wisdom of Scripture to the questions people are living with now.

Travel from Genesis to Revelation through accessible, thoughtful reflections grounded in serious biblical scholarship and shaped by more than four decades of pastoral care. Every day also includes a hymn — its title, composer and year — an invitation to seek it out and read, listen, sing, or simply sit with faith’s poetry in whatever form you choose to meet it.

The scholarship is substantial, but the book wears that depth lightly, translating complex passages into warm, plainspoken reflections you can use. Grace & Peace belongs to no single church or denomination — only to the love of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Whether you are new to the Scriptures, returning to faith, carrying doubts, or seeking a deeper daily rhythm, this is more than a devotional. It is a trustworthy companion for ordinary days, difficult questions, and a complicated world.

On the length

At 858 pages, Grace & Peace isn’t meant to be read all at once. It’s a couple of pages a day — and by the end of a year, those couple of pages take a reader not only through the whole book but through the whole arc of Scripture, Genesis to Revelation. A reader can start any day of the year.

Advance praise

“Grace & Peace is a tender, wise companion for all of us who live with limits, missteps, and unanswered questions, yet still desire to trust God more deeply.”

Bishop Ruben SaenzPresident, Council of Bishops · The United Methodist Church

Dr. Jim Riddlesperger · professor emeritus of political science, Texas Christian University

“It’s been one of the great privileges of my life to share a faith journey with Dr. Tim Bruster. In Grace & Peace, Dr. Bruster leads the reader through an ambitious journey through the Bible in a year. I love that his approach is grounded in daily living while being tied to good theology at the same time. And as an added bonus, we are led in each lesson to humming familiar hymns as we go through the day! This book will serve as a blessing both to the reader’s mind and to their sense of place among the people of the world.”

Rev. Dr. Sid Hall III · pastor emeritus, Trinity Church of Austin

“What a refreshing devotional. Tim Bruster has put together what I believe is the most comprehensive Christian devotional I’ve ever read, combining biblical scholarship, a deep understanding of the power of hymnology as a theological resource, as well as more than forty-five years of experience as a pastor and leader in the church. And yet, each of the 365 segments works as a complete devotional on its own. I highly recommend this book for clergy and laypeople alike!”

Rev. Brooks Harrington · founder, Methodist Justice Ministry · author of No Mercy, No Justice

“Our good friend and pastor Tim has graced us with a year-long Bible feast divided into a meal for every day of the year. Tim’s is not a book we will read through once and then put aside, but one we will turn to as a daily companion for the rest of our praying lives. And, uniquely, given his love for sacred music, each section cites a beloved hymn. An astonishing undertaking!”

C. David Grant · professor emeritus of religion, Texas Christian University

“This book beautifully accomplishes three things. First, it is a wonderful collection of meditations for daily devotions. Second, it is an excellent one-year guided introduction to the Christian Bible. And third, it is a masterful weaving together of solid Biblical scholarship, hymnody, contemporary authors, and personal experiences—all of which make the Bible come alive for today.”

William A. Waddell Jr. · attorney and lifelong United Methodist

“Tim Bruster’s Grace & Peace is a wonderful devotional journey through the Bible that helps the reader pause each day to be in the presence of God—and Tim. Grace & Peace is not preachy or doctrinaire, yet it gently but powerfully nudges us closer to the mind of Christ. The pairing of hymns with each day’s devotional is an added dimension for deeper thought each day.”

About the author

Dr. Tim Bruster has spent more than four decades helping people find their footing in faith. Former senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth and a leader in his denomination, he became known as a preacher who could take the deep things of Scripture and make them feel not only understandable but usable. He brings the heart of a minister and the mind of a scholar to Grace & Peace, his daily companion through Scripture.

In retirement he serves as part-time director of development at Cultiv8 Community, a nonprofit devoted to connecting neighbors to neighbors and restoring life-giving habitats. He lives in Fort Worth with his wife, Susan, and two rambunctious labradoodles.
